It requires lifelong education, support and follow-up to develop and refine self-care skills and behavior.
Deaconess Hospital offers classes in diabetes self-management, in addition to individualized instruction and nutrition counseling. A support group for people with diabetes meets every other month on the Deaconess campus. Our Diabetes Care team focuses on providing the knowledge, skills and services required for both self-management of diabetes and for the best possible quality of life. We offer a network of health services to the community including educational programs, seminars and screenings.
Our diabetes management training includes:
- Understanding diabetes
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Hyper/hypoglycemia
- Meal planning
- Importance of exercise
- Diabetes medications
- Insulin administration
- Foot care
- Acute and long-term complications
- Sick day care
- Coping strategies
- Community resources
- Gestational diabetes/Diabetes in Pregnancy
- Weight management
Outpatient diabetes education is available by appointment Monday through Friday with physician referral.
A family member or other support person is encouraged to attend the diabetes management training sessions.
